Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin News Notes 8th December 2025

Notes on the run from the President

Hi Everyone,
As the year draws to a close, I want to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication, especially on the successful projects we launched in the first half of the year. I hope you all have a wonderful time celebrating Christmas with family and friends.
We have scheduled a series of summer social meetings before we return to the golf club in the new year:
 - December 15th: Snapper
- December 22nd: Walt & Burley
- December 29th: Cartel Taqueria
Our first meeting back at the golf club will be on February 5th.
Please take some time to relax and unwind over the festive season. Be safe, and I look forward to seeing everyone again in the new year.
Merry Christmas

President Warrick

This Thursday is our Christmas Party - bring a plate and join in the celebrations!
Last week's speaker
Dylan Grubb from EQUIPD which is a community gym based in the Chifley Health and Wellbeing Hub (9/70 McacLaurin Crescent, Chifley ph 51356600) gave a sensibly age specific address to us about "Why You Need to Keep Fit". The benefits are clear: controls weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and bone and joint problems. It reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers.  It's good for your body, and good for your mind.
How much exercise? -  for one age about 30 minutes of moderate intensity on most days. What type of exercise?  A range of exercises is best : incorporating fitness, strength, flexibility and balance.
We then embarked on an intense discussion about balance issues, falls, the seriousness of hip fractures, osteoporosis and related stuff.
It was very thought provoking and very helpful - we need to give it a try!

Rotary Foundation Australia - News - Vale Maurie Stack PDG

News has come through of the passing of PDG Maurie Stack.  Members may recall that Maurie was a guest speaker via Zoom in June last year, in his capacity as Chair of Rotary Foundation Australia.

Rotary Foundation Australia shares The Rotary Foundation’s mission of enabling Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.

However, while general donations to Rotary Foundation Australia are directed to Rotary Foundation Australia’s overseas aid fund, donors who wish to support significant projects within Australia are now able to make their contribution to Rotary Foundation Australia’s Public Benevolent Institution (PBI).

The Rotary Foundation Australia (PBI) Ltd was registered in 2020, and enables tax deductible receipts to be provided for projects funded within Australia.  PDG Maurie and his team were recognised for the significant contribution they made to the development of the PBI.

When Maurie gave the presentation to our Club last year, he was already undergoing treatment.  He was a member of my cohort of District Governors in 2015-16 and is remembered as a committed Rotarian and a generous benefactor to The Rotary Foundation.
