Welcome to Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin News Notes 12th October 2026

Last Week
We heard from Heather Hart from the Stroke Foundation  about recognising the symptoms of a stroke, treatment, and steps we can all take to avoid or minimise the risk of strokes.
Heather has volunteered as an Educator in the ACT Branch of Stroke Foundation  for many years, and brings to her presentations a  long history of experiences with stoke victims while she worked as a nurse. She shares her personal recovery journey, poetry and practical tips throughout the Stroke Foundation's community network and publications.
A stroke can be caused by the blood supply being blocked - an ischaemic stroke. It also maybe caused by a bleeding - a haemorrhagic stroke.
To help recognize the stroke occurring in anyone nearby, Heather talked about:
FACE - drooped
ARMS - unable to raise?
SPEECH - slurred or confused
TIME - is critical - call 000
Things we need to do:
.know your blood pressure.
.Healthy eating  - fresh fruit and legumes, cereals.
.get active
.drop the salt intake
.avoid alcohol
.stop smoking.
Its was a very useful presentation. Publications and information sheets are available through Stroke Foundation. Thank you Heather.
We also discussed the preparations for the Candle Festival, Hay WMHS visit and other club business.
