Please note is that there is no meeting at the Commonwealth Club this Thursday. Instead, we’re going to find out all about how to save on electricity bills through solar panels and batteries, thanks to an evening tour being put on by Reposit Power. More details are below – please let Ross know ASAP if you plan to join in. We’ve also got some good news on the camp for Ukrainian children we raised funds for; another report from roving reporter Faye; and information on the last meeting. Finally, keep reading to learn about a little-known benefit of owning a Tesla.

Last week’s meeting
Acting President Warrick demonstrating that the AWS Snowball Edge Computer is indeed portable.

Last Thursday we heard from Nik Kwiatkowski, who spoke about uses of the AWS Snowball Edge Computer, a deployable/portable system he and others have been working on for users such as defence and bushfire units.

Nik, Acting President Warrick, and Keith following the presentation of a certificate of appreciation to Nik.

Children’s camp success
You will recall our changeover dinner raised over $4000 for a camp for 50 Ukrainian children and teachers to be held at a resort in Poland. This money plus some funds on hand and $2500 from the Rotary Club of Hall meant we sent $9500 to the Rotary Club of Warsaw in late June. This converted into around 5800 Euros – just over one quarter of the 21,000 Euro budget for the camp.

The Rotary Club of Warsaw secured funding for the rest of the budget and has provided records of the payment of the funds to Klub Sosnowy (the camp host).

There’s more! The owners of Klub Sosnowy contributed to the project, allowing the total number of participants to rise from 50 to 80 (including teachers). The camp is being held in two rounds:
  • Round I started on July 23, 2023, with 40 participants from Zaporozhye - around 1,060 km from Warsaw.
  • Round II will start on August 20, 2023, with 40 participants from Vinnitsa near Lviv - around 420 km from Warsaw.

Rotary Club of Warsaw Immediate Past President Piotr Kaczorowski will provide more details of the project during our Zoom meeting on 12 October 2023.

Look out, Rotary’s about
On our visit to the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens we saw a well branded shelter called the Rotary Education Pavilion and later “googled” it to find out more. Below is a very short extract of the Education Programs purpose.

“The Botanic Gardens Education Program offers interactive outdoor learning experiences and is curriculum aligned.

Topics range from exploring the Sensory Gardens to understanding the importance of biodiversity.
Themes include:
  • indigenous perspectives
  • conservation
  • interdependence
  • biodiversity
  • sustainability.

It caters for class sizes of between 25 and 30 students (with teacher supervision), the program is free.

It is developed and delivered by the experienced environmental scientists and educators from Natura Pacific.

Students can interact with our:
  • natural flora and fauna
  • environment and heritage.

The program is developed to inspire a lifelong love of our environment, where students actively seek to learn about, and care for it.”

Next meeting: Club Visit to Reposit Power
Get in early, as next Thursday, 27 July. we are going green and visiting Reposit Power, located at unit 17/2 Yallourn Street, Fyshwick. We will meet out the front of the office at 5.15 pm for a 5.30 pm start.

Reposit Power supplies solar panels and battery systems and has a unique offering in the market. Their head engineer, Mark McNulty, will show us around their business, where we will see some of the very latest technology in the field.

He will explain what their unique business offers and Mark will tell us about the benefits of going to an all-electric home. He will also give us an update on what incentive schemes are on offer, to rid our homes of fossil fuel guzzling appliances.

There will be a small charge of $10.00 per head (paid by card on the night) to cover the cost of drinks and sandwiches after our tour.

If you have been considering going solar, but didn’t know where to start or it all seems too hard, then this is the ideal opportunity to come along and learn about Solar Power.

If you are concerned about our environment then do not miss this event, Invite your friends, family members and neighbours.

Please ensure you accept or decline this invitation by 11.00 am Tuesday 25th July 2023.
