Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin - News Notes 16 July 2025:

Notes on the Run:

Hi Everyone

I hope everyone had a good weekend, mine was busy with a dull but necessary appliance replacement task and too many trips to IKEA. Anyone got a spare Allen key?

I’ll be away this week but I have handed the keys temporarily back to Russell and I will leave you in his capable hands as I sail up to Moreton Island and back.

I was thinking, while running on Saturday actually, about -rooting an End Trachoma project at a park run. The Burley Griffin park run came to mind.

I would love to hear if people think it would be a good match. Is it a good target audience? Would it be a good fit for the club? Something similar to what we did a few years ago, collecting hygiene items a putting the together, shipping them up to a school in the NT. I’m interested in knowing what people think

This weeks we have Bill Donovan speaking on “Beyond Aging” I believe Bill used to be a school principal as well.

Have a good week. I’ll think of you as I head up the coast on Thursday Lunchtime.

Warrick

A very polished presentation was provided by Serina Mace and representatives from Trade Travel. They have a solid track record of working with PROBUS and other Rotary Clubs in providing travel services.

Examples of Trade Travel's Tours:
  • Arkaroola Wilderness, Flinders ranges and Baross Valley - about  $5198 pp . for 9 nights
  •      Colours of Autumn in the Victorian Alpine Region:
A tour featuring Milawa Cheese Company, Bright, Beechworth, and other attractions in the Victorian Alps.
  • Cruises:
Trade Travel offers various cruising options, including river cruises and ocean cruises.
If clubs are interested in learning more about Trade Travel's offerings, they can contact Trade Travel directly to schedule a presentation or discuss their travel plans.
They are certainly very experienced and well organized.
Ed: Unfortunately the costs of travel seem to have exploded since COVID and our Club’s last adventure to Europe and Quatar. Even a package tour to Japan seems to be double the costs Ross and the Ed. incurred last December.
Next meeting - Bill Donovan - Beyond Aging.
Our next Club meeting is on Thursday, 10th July at the Royal Canberra Golf Club. Please respond to Ross’s email invitation ASAP if you have not already done so. Our programme for the next 4 weeks is below. Please note your tasks.

Rotary In-joke of the Week:

This is the transcript of an actual radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations on November 10, 1995.
Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS, AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.
(Ed.  Old joke but sounds topical doesn’t it?)
