NOTES ON THE RUN

Hi Everyone,

Well - Cricket was a washout over the weekend, and the Canberra show entries didn't win a thing! Oh well, always next year...

Stay tuned for details on a new project coming out of Rotary's End Trachoma initiative, we will be making some kits up for a school in the Northern Territory. I know I said in Katherine - I was slightly off though. Robinson River School is 799 km from Katherine. We need to make 25 kits and I will be giving out some details as we go along.

It looks like the parking went well at the Canberra show and most people managed to stay dry(ish). I'm sure there will be some tales too

We are assisting with the Goodwin Village Markets this Friday and Saturday, another good piece of help

Have a great Week

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Royal Canberra Show

Over the three days of the show our Club helped the Rotary Club of Woden collecting parking fees at 3 of the nominated parking areas. Many thanks to Ross and Collette Brown, Peter Davies, Michael Rabey, Sharon Green and Sally Goodspeed.

I personally can only speak for the Sunday afternoon 12 - 4 p.m. shift. It was very busy, no time to sit down and the majority of show attendees were looking forward to the show and happy to pay the $10 fee. When I explained (to some) that we were from Rotary and would receive some of the fee to go towards Rotary activities in the community they were very supportive.

I would particularly like to thank Sally Goodspeed who worked all Sunday afternoon. Sally has attended a number of our meetings and wanted to participate in a community service activity with Rotary. I think she enjoyed her time and met a number of Rotarians and their helpers from the Woden Club. Although we were both tired at the end we felt that we had done something worthwhile to raise funds.

I would also like to thank Ross Brown for co-ordinating our club’s contribution and The Rotary Club of Woden for asking us to participate.

Sharon Green

Peace Project

If you have been watching Facebook then you may be aware that Amnesty International has approached the Club to provide the striker for the Peace Bell for their Vigil for Ukraine. The vigil will be held at 5.30 pm on Friday, 11 March. Hopefully many members will be able to at dinner to show their support for Ukraine.

The other event coming up at the Peace Bell is set for Sunday ,20 March at 2 pm. This is to recognise Harmony Day in conjunction with the Canberra Multicultural Community Council. Seven new languages will be added to the Peace Pole at Lennox Gardens at this ceremony.

LAST WEEK'S MEETING (Feb 24th)

Alice Hathorn told us about the method used by her local Landcare group ACT Urban Woodland Rescue to transform a suburban park in Weston Creek, from barren and weed infested to biodiverse native woodland meadow. They have dedicated two years to restoring the park’s natural biodiversity, controlling serious invasive weeds such as African Lovegrass and Chilean Needle Grass. They have been measuring the health of this environment based on the insect life and the bird life and have had over 40 species of local birds and over nine species of native butterflies return. Alice and her team at ACT Urban Woodland Rescue are encouraging other communities to do the same in their local areas.
