Last week’s meeting
Two of the Senior Solicitors at Bill’s previous employer Sneddon, Hall and Gallop provided us with a detailed look at the use of Wills, Power of Attorney’s and the new concept of Advanced Care Directives. The cost of not having a Will on Death is not only in the charges incurred by the Solicitors but also the time involved in settling an Estate through interacting with the Supreme Court. Julie suggested this would cost the Estate at least another $5,000. She outlined some of the must haves in a Will to make it legally binding.
Power of Attorney’s are again a must have if a person loses capacity both to carry out your financial as well as medical affairs. Loss of capacity can occur very quickly in the case of heart attack or stroke so having a legally binding POA can be critical to your well being. A POA can cover both medical and financial affairs in the ACT and even old POA’s are legal even though new provisions have been enacted in ACT.
An Advanced Care Directive is another way of covering your Medical needs when a person loses Mental or Physical Capacity. This is a way of indicating to your next of kin any medical preferences you may have. Secondly this can give Medical Staff an indication of your wishes should you have a substantial loss of your quality of life. The Medical profession have a Duty of Care which requires them to do no harm even though you may have limited quality of life. Every State has their own Advanced Health Directive Forms that can filled out to keep with next of Kin. The URL is https://health.act.gov.au/services/advance-care-planning.
Another important point is that your Wills, POA’s and Advanced Care Directives should be reviewed every 3-5 years as your circumstances change. However a change of Address does not make these documents illegal as long as you resided at that address when you enacted these documents.
Next meeting on Thursday the 5th October at the Canberra Club
George will give us a presentation on his recent trip to the Cape York and Torres Strait by light aircraft.

The National Youth Science Forum Seeking Volunteers
Rotary is a Founding Partner of the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF), and every year Rotarians join our program as volunteers to support the program.
We are really excited to be able to move back to our residential NYSF Year 12 Program in January 2024, and we need your help to ensure that our students have the most amazing time!
The NYSF is seeking interest from volunteers who would like to share their time with the staff and students during the NYSF Year 12 Program in January 2024.
Volunteers with the NYSF derive a great sense of fulfilment and satisfaction from their work and NYSF is certainly very much enhanced by their generous efforts. You will get to meet and spend time with the next generation of STEM experts, while visiting some of Australia's most cutting edge STEM facilities.
Every January six to eight Rotary volunteers spend their time with us committing to:
- Supporting the NYSF Staff and our Student Staff by being the part of the supervisory team, and
- Providing pastoral care and first aid to the students.
You can read a position description for this volunteer role by clicking on this link.
To find out more about the NYSF and what we do for our STEM students, please visit our website.
To Express your Interest to volunteer with us at the NYSF January Year 12 program and to let us know what dates you are available, please click on this button.
Please contact us on programs@nysf.edu.au if you have any questions or concerns. Please note that we work remotely, and that email is the most efficient way to contact us.
We are currently updating the contact details for Rotary Clubs. If there is a more appropriate email address for your Club, please let us know
