NOTES ON THE RUN

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to everyone who helped out with the Goodwin village fair on the weekend, they were very grateful for our support.

Cricket ended over the weekend - 4 Wickets in the one innings so a good way to go out!

We will have Allan Hawke this week talking about Blundell's cottage, I hope to see everyone there.

Thank you for your support of the Ukrainian crisis, we have successfully made our donations.

Next stop will be to do something for the flood victims closer to home, but we will need to come up with a way of funding this.

One way will be to make a lot of money through the Incognito Art Show - www.incognitoartshowcanberra.gallery We have a great website, a great concept and just need artists to go there. If you know any "Arty" friends, please direct them that way...

Have a great week

President Warrick

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Shelterbox

Adrienne Frances from ABC 666 arranged an interview with myself and Mike Greenslade CEO Shelterbox Australia last Friday afternoon. The discussion focused on Ukraine, mentioned our Club’s donation of a Shelterbox and asked for support from listeners. Mike has now advised that approximate $2,000 has been donated since last Friday from Canberra and the region! That is another two Shelterbox for Ukraine. The National support has reached $50,000.

Volunteering at Goodwin Markets

How good was it to see three generations of the Howieson family assisting with the lift and shift task for Goodwin last Saturday. Thanks to Graeme, Warrick, Jess and Thomas. Also a task enjoyed by Greg, Ross, John (Grant), Margaret, Ron, Eric and myself. Easy job with some fellowship and much goodwill with efforts most appreciated by Goodwin organisers.

Peace Project

If you have been watching Facebook then you may be aware that Amnesty International has approached the Club to provide the striker for the Peace Bell for their Vigil for Ukraine. The vigil will be held at 5.30 pm on Friday, 11 March. Hopefully many members will be able to attend to show their support for the message of Peace being demonstrated for Ukraine. May Peace Prevail on Earth.

The other event coming up at the Peace Bell is set for Sunday, 20 March at 2 pm. This is to recognise Harmony Day in conjunction with the Canberra Multicultural Community Council. Seven new languages will be added to the Peace Pole at Lennox Gardens at this ceremony.

Request to home-host NYSF students

I announced at the 3 March meeting that the Nambucca Valley Rotary Club had inquired about the possibility of our Club members hosting up to three students to attend a hands on session of the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) at the ANU for around a week in April.

I've subsequently been advised that only one student plans to attend the Canberra session. I'm happy to host him at my home (being able to do so is a benefit of being retired!). Accordingly, no assistance will be required from other members.

LAST WEEK'S MEETING (March 3rd)

Speaker: Richard Johnston, President, Kingston and Barton Residents Group described the Inner South Canberra Community Strategic Plan.

George Wilson introduced Richard who gave an interesting presentation on the Strategic Plan with several questions coming from the floor afterwards.

Toast

Our Club toasted the Kyiv Multinational Rotary Club, an English-speaking Rotary Club. It was founded in 2006, and has a split Ukrainian/expat membership. Over the years, over 50 expats have passed through, while the Club maintained a membership of between 15 and 20.

Since 2006, it has undertaken some 20 major projects around Ukraine, including: putting a baby incubator in a remote regional hospital in the West, sponsoring operations for 10 children with cerebral palsy; putting computers in schools on the contact line less than 10 kilometres from the Russian border; and working with orphanages in Southern Odessa.

Its projects have improved the life prospects and outlook of almost one thousand children and have touched more than five thousand. Baby lives have been saved, 10 year old children have started walked for the first time, doctors have been trained, career opportunities have been opened; and the Club has shown thousands of unfortunate children that the world cares about them. That may actually be its most important result.

The Club has worked with Rotary clubs outside Ukraine, including Clubs from the US, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, and even Brazil.

Other Items

Treasurer Ross Brown reported that the Club made $1,300.00 from the Canberra Show parking duty. He also requested members respond to his weekly emails as to whether they are attending the meeting or not.

Eric Carmody request that members please return your Environmental Surveys ASAP.

Warrick spoke on the Ukraine Crisis. He requested the Club donate $1,000 to RAWCS and a Shelter Box towards the crisis. He also spoke about the End Trachoma Campaign. Our Rotary Club will donate 25 Hygiene kits consisting of everyday items such as soap, toothbrushes, towels etc.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

--Many people from the UK have pale skin. They're like bleached Wales.

--What happens if someone slaps you at a high frequency?

It Hertz.

--I went to a diner with a couple I know, last night, and they started arguing.

Now, normally I’m not one to take sides, but they were so distracted by yelling at each other that I stole her fries and his coleslaw.

--Got home from work today to find my kids have been on eBay all day.

If they’re still there tomorrow I’ll lower the price.

--I’ve lost a lot of weight just by wearing bread on my head.

It’s a new loaf hat diet I’m trying.

--A thief stole the wheels off my car last night.

I’m working tirelessly to catch him.

--I ate an entire feather pillow last week.

Since then I’ve been feeling down in the dumps.
