From the President

Hello Club Members

This week we are having a Zoom Meeting with a presentation from Stephen McMillan about his trip to the Northern Territory.

Counting for the choice of venue has so far been 8 in favour of the Royal Canberra Golf Club and 2 for the Mercure. Please indicate to me your choice before we close off the Plebiscite.

Discussions about the possible merger of Clubs will be held on the 31St August at the Canberra Yacht Club if you wish to join our group.

The ceremony to remember the Bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima went well with around 70 people attending including the singers Rhythm Syndicate, Dr Sue Warham, Shane Rattenbury and the Japanese Ambassador. The ceremony was very moving and showed the Peace Bell to be a focal point of Peace ceremonies in Canberra. Some of the Peace cranes produced by the Mawson and Majura Schools will be sent to the Peace Park in Hiroshima. Children and teachers from the school were present.

I spoke at our Meeting on the huge advances in technology, medicine, transport, housing, education, leisure activities that have been achieved since 1945. If you want copies of the presentation, please send me a request to russelldew1@gmail.com.

The Woden daybreak club has announced that they will from now on will have two meetings in the mornings at their normal venue of the Pearce Community Centre. On the 2nd and 4th Thursdays they will meet at local restaurant. Their first night meeting is this week on the 8th August. If you want to join them, please email wodendaybreak@outlook.com. Gary Davis will be speaking on Rotarians Against Malaria after his recent attendance at a Conference on Malaria in Port Moresby.

Yours in Rotary

Peace Bell Promotion - seeking donations
As agreed at our recent meetings, RC Canberra Burley Griffin has agreed to support advertising in the National Capital School Excursion Planner. This magazine is distributed to every school in Australia (10,400) and promotes activities for visiting school groups to our fair city.  Tours of Nara Peace Park, including a visit to the Peace Bell, are part of this club's work in promoting peace in the world, especially engaging young people.

The club agreed to support advertising for three years starting from 2025. Currently the discounted price is $750 for a quarter page advertisement in 2025.  Seven members have already donated to fund this initiative. Thank you to Andrea, Bill, Monica, Ross, Erik, Michael and Astrida. Further donations are most welcome!

The preferred method for the donation is by way of a direct deposit into the Peace Bell account, this saves the PayPal admin fees which are around 5% if using the Peace Bell Web site. Here are the details:

Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin - Peace Bell Account
BSB: 062-902
Account Number:  1037 8069
Description for the transfer "Surname Advertising" e.g. "Brown Advertising".
This way the Ross can easily identify who the deposit is from.

Thank you all for your support.
Astrida

From the Treasurer
Just a short note to let you know that we have set the 2024-2025 Rotary dues at $380.00 (a modest increase from last year’s dues).

I will be issuing the dues invoices this week.

It is preferred that your payment is made by electronic transfer straight into the Clubs Bank account, this will save us on the merchant fees charged by MYOB. Payment instructions will be included in the invoice.

Should you wish to discuss payment of your dues, please feel free to call me or shoot me an email.

Regards

Treasurer Ross
