Welcome to another Bulletin. In addition to notice of our AGM, there is information on are several other events over the next two months that may be of interest to our members. We have two reports: one of a International Day of Peace ceremony in Hay and one of a Rotary Club sponsoring art in Armidale. Finally, a cartoon that explains why GPS car navigation systems default to a female voice. Happy reading!

Annual General Meeting
The Club’s Annual General Meeting and elections will be held on Thursday, 16 November, during our regular meeting at the Commonwealth Club.

International Day of Peace at St Mary’s School, Hay
The following article and photos appeared in the Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak’s bulletin. Our Club cosponsored St Mary’s School Peace Pole with Woden Daybreak:

"Once again St Mary’s Primary School in Hay held a ceremony on International Peace Day. They also participated in the Rotary Peace Essay and our Rotary Club provided three Booktopia certificates for the top three essays.

We are so fortunate at St Mary's to have a culturally diverse community who enjoy celebrating their culture at school on two special days during the year. We celebrate Harmony Day in March and International Peace Day in September. On these days students and families dress in traditional dress.

On September 21st, we prayed for peace at Mass, rang bells during our Peace Ceremony, repeated together 'May Peace Prevail on Earth', and read a statement from the UN Secretary General.

Our Year 6 students were fortunate to visit the Peace Bell in Canberra recently and they were able to make the connection between Canberra and our local school Peace Pole.

Our families and staff supplied a banquet of international delicacies for lunch and we gathered to share and connect with each other. We were fortunate to have some Presentation Sisters, (past staff) attend and local community members join us for the celebrations.

Our senior students received their prizes for the Rotary Club of Wyndham Harbour Peace Essay Competition sponsored by the Woden Daybreak Rotary Club at the end of term Assembly on Friday.

Many thanks to the Woden Daybreak Rotary Club."
Next meeting
On Thursday, 19 October, we meet at the Commonwealth Club and will hear from Lori Gould, who will update us on research into a regular visitor to the ACT, the Japanese Snipe.

Look Out Rotarys About
Rotary enhances all aspects of our community life in, sometimes, surprising ways. I spied this contribution while visiting the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in Armidale. In our travels we always try to visit the regional galleries and Armidale has one of the best endowed, including a large donation of art works collected by Howard Hinton over his lifetime. NERAM run an "adopt a painting" scheme for purchases and restoration / conservation works, including this item sponsored by the local Rotary Club.

Closing TONIGHT: The Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak Mango Fundraiser
Buy a tray of mangoes to support Rotary programs! Each tray costs $25.00 and has approximately 4.5kg of excellent quality mangoes. The number varies according to the size of the mangoes. It all depends on the crop and the weather. There isn’t a choice of mango size.

To buy, go to: https://www.trybooking.com/CJZML. The closing time for orders is 11pm on Monday, 16 October. That’s TODAY!

Woden Daybreak will request a delivery date in early to mid-December, but this can’t be guaranteed. The mango farmer will confirm the delivery date in late November and we will be in touch with purchasers then with the collection details. Please note that mangoes will be delivered to a Rotary Club member’s garage in Holder and are to be collected from there.

Please email rotarymangoes@outlook.com if you have any questions about the fundraiser.

Zonta Says No to Violence against Women Peace Bell ringing: 10 December
Each year Zonta International holds a worldwide campaign Zonta Says No to violence against women and children. The 16-day Zonta Say No campaign is linked to the United Nations Goal No 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The campaign begins on 25 November (the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and culminates on 10 December (the UN International Human Rights Day). During this period, the Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast (ZCCB) raises awareness across the ACT.

To convey the scale of this problem, the ZCCB will be releasing social media posts highlighting the number of women and children who have died through family and domestic violence this year. ZCCB will display orange lady silhouettes with Say No to Violence in the Civic Library from 25 November to 10 December and provide information about the impact of family and domestic violence on women and girls.

Our final Zonta Says No activity is a joint ZCCB and Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin event: the ringing of the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell on the morning of 10 December 2023. Participants at the event ring the bell and say the first name and age of each woman who has died from family and domestic violence over the last year. We also ring the peace bell once for all the children, once for all Aboriginal women, once for all the men and once for all New Zealanders who have died through family and domestic violence. As of 6 October, 38 women have died as a result of family and domestic violence across Australia and countless others have been affected.

All are invited to attend the Peace Bell ringing to acknowledge those who have died through family and domestic violence in 2023.
