Dear President

I am writing to draw your attention to a request for sponsorship of a young lady who resides in Charnwood to participate in a Rotary program known as the 5-day Challenge Sail.

Attached is a letter from Rotarian David Binks, Chair of the District 9510 Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge Committee, seeking sponsorship for this potential participant. Details of this program are available from the letter and a short video at the following link: https://vimeo.com/601044756.

The Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin is not in a position to respond positively to this request in light of constrained fundraising and commitments to other youth activities. We are passing the request to Clubs that meet relatively close to Charnwood in the hope that one might be able to provide the necessary support.

Yours faithfully

Andrea Conti

Hi Andrea

Many thanks for calling me back this afternoon and listening to my request about The Youth Sailing Challenge program.

If you go to this link https://vimeo.com/601044756  and look at the short video it should give you a pretty clear picture of the program we have set up with the tall ship One and All in Adelaide. The video will also give you a good idea of the enormous benefits the young people who participate in these voyages gain.

The success of the program has led to its expansion.  We commenced running one program a year in Adelaide and for some time now have been doing two a year. Twenty five young people go on each voyage.

A committee in Melbourne has been established to run the program in Victoria in their tall ship Enterprize. Sydney and Brisbane are also coming on board utilising NSW and Qld Tall Ships.

It costs $1,100 to send a student on a 5 day Challenge Sail. My committee normally charges Clubs $950 and the committee raises the balance. We have received an application for a student Jasmine Kay who lives in Charnwood to go on our next voyage which commences on Sunday 2nd of October.

Her mother comes from South Australia and knows of the great, often life-changing, benefit the Voyage brings to the young participants (15 to 18 year olds). We always have a Rotary Club to give guidance to the students before they depart and to have them speak to the club about their experience and what they have gained from it on their return.  I would request your club carries out this task if possible for Jasmine.

In this instance we have some funds from a commercial sponsor which will go a long way to cover the $950 a club normally pays. If your club was in a position to contribute a little money towards Jasmine's voyage, it would be very much appreciated.  If you are unable to do so but can look after her, we will find all the funds. Please consider this request and let me know your thoughts.  If you are able to assist we will put you in touch with Jasmine and give you more information.

Thanks again for agreeing to consider this proposal.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards
David Binks OAM CF
