World Peace Day celebrated at Canberra Rotary World Peace Bell
Last Thursday the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin held the 8th annual United Nations World Peace Day commemorations at Canberra Nara Peace Park, around the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell. The ceremony was held in perfect spring weather with a peaceful lake and surrounding gardens contrasting with the serious issues of world peace confronting us all.
A crowd of diplomats, Rotarians and invited guests participated in the ceremony which was led by Tim Gavel from the ABC.
The Choir Chorus of Women provided delightful renditions of locally produced songs focussing on Peace.
The Deputy Representative of the UNHCR Mr Nai Kit addressed the gathering and read a letter from the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in which he urged us all to play a more emphatic role in pursuing peace in the World.
The newly arrived Ambassador for Japan, Mr Suzuki Kazuhiro presented a speech from the perspective of a country that was in recent history, massively affected by the use of nuclear weapons.
Our own DG Andrea Grosvenor spoke of the important role Rotary has taken throughout its existence in putting Peace as a first and foremost priority for Rotary through its range of community activities.
The keynote address was presented by Professor Tom Calma, whose experience in the presentation of “The Voice” issue for the forthcoming referendum was woven into the various themes presented by earlier speakers, and the importance of World Peace in the consideration of all issues presently being debated around the Voice.
The RCCBG annual Chief Minister’s Peace Prize was then awarded to Ms Susan Hutchinson by the CM’s representative Mr Brendan Smith, Commissioner for International Engagement. Susan is a worthy winner having been involved for several years in providing assistance to refugees from Afghanistan and arranging Rotary to facilitate assistance in medical and related areas. The award is supported by RCCBG making a donation and award of a Paul Harris Fellowship to support the work of Rotary International.
All in all and wonderful day which is growing is importance and popularity each year.

Another Peace Pole. This time for the Sathya Sai College - Secondary Campus at Dungay near Murwillumbah
This pole was a joint effort between the Rotary Club of Australian Nomads and the Rotary Club of Murwillumbah. They shared the cost of the pole.
