Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin - News Notes 9 July 2025:

Notes on the Run:

A bit of a wet weekend about town but there were some clear skies about and I hope everyone took advantage of them as they could

I was great to see Rob Uhl last week and good to have it as a casual conversation rather than a formal presentation

We were due to have a board meeting next Wednesday but I have had today until Wed 23 due to Umm... Staff unavailability... Me Sorry

As I mentioned briefly last week, Astrida and I had a good meeting with the UN Team at Old Parliament House and things are moving forwards with the International Day of Peace planning. Rotaract are organising the Hiroshima Nagasaki Day in August as well.

I am putting together a training plan for Peace Bell Guides that we can run on a regular basis as a service and outreach program. We also have the Candle Festival that is a while away but still on the Horizon.

Have a good week

Last Week’s Meeting: PDG Rob Uhl – Embracing Change!

Those members who were unable to attend last Thursday's Club meeting missed an excellent presentation by the Immediate Past District Governor, Rob Uhl.  Rob had handed over the reins of the District to her        successor.  only three days earlier (on 30 June), after an extremely busy year criss-crossing our large Rotary District, listening to the issues facing individual Clubs as well as enjoying their successes.

Rob's presentation focused on the theme of Embracing Change to Grow Membership, to ensure the survival of Rotary at a time of decreasing membership numbers.  She distilled the knowledge she had gained from all sources on her District Governor journey to propose a range of options to ensure that Rotary and its programs will endure into the future.

Members took the opportunity to raise a number of issues with Rob, including the views of the District on Clubs using moneys raised through fund-raising activities to subsidise members' dues.  Club Treasurer Ross in particular was keen to clarify the District's position on this important issue, given recent discussions within the Club.

Rob's attendance at the first meeting for 2025-26 was invaluable in setting the Club on the right path for success in the new Rotary year.  Thank you, Rob!

Rotary In-joke of the Week:

A doctor, lawyer, and a Rotarian in charge of fundraising all die and arrive at the Pearly Gates about the same time. St. Peter tells them they may each have one thing to take with them to Heaven.
The doctor is first, and asks for $1 million. This is given and he proceeds to enter Heaven. The lawyer, not to be outdone, asks for $2 million. "Very well," say St. Peter and opens the gate to Heaven for the lawyer.
Finally it is time for the Rotarian, who had just finished a fundraising project for The Rotary Foundation. St. Peter asks him what he would like to take to Heaven. The fundraiser moves up very close to St. Peter, and in a soft voice asks, "It it's not too much trouble, could I just have the names of those two people who were ahead of me in line?"
