PRESIDENT'S REPORT

The Zoom meeting last week attracted 24 participants including our Guest Speaker, Jacek Kozlowski, the Coordinator of the Warsaw World Peace Bell. Also present were Anja Mewes and Reiner Braun from the Berlin World Peace Bell and Ian Brown from Cowra Rotary and Cowra Peace Bell. District Governor Peter Ford from Aurora Gungahlin Rotary, visiting Rotarians from Tasmania, Maryborough (Queensland) and John Britton from Tuggeranong Rotary.

Jacek outlined the extensive work he has performed at the Warsaw Peace Bell including images from many ceremonies held over the years. and examples of the close to 30 Peace Poles unveiled across Poland. We are going to try and connect Jacek with Rotary in Warsaw and Krakow to see if it may be possible for Rotary Clubs to join him in donating additional Peace Poles to Polish Schools.

Next Thursday it is back to the Commonwealth Club when our guest speaker will be Hal MacDonald to talk on Project Watttle.

For those of you attending the joint meeting with the Canberra Club on Monday, June 7th, please pay your $40 to Ross this week so we can get accurate numbers.

THE PEACE PROJECT

The Rotary Club of Collingwood – South Georgian Bay Canada have prepared a resolution requesting the Rotary International Board to consider endorsing the Treaty on the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons. Our Club supports the resolution and has proposed the same resolution to our District 9705. We understand that in order for this support to go forward to Rotary International our District needs to have every club in the District vote on the proposal and if supported lodge that support to Rotary International no later than the 30thJune 2021. Following a recent Zoom meeting that our Club hosted, this resolution is also being supported by the Rotary Club of Tasman Peninsula who are forwarding the same resolution to their District 9830. I trust that we are able to deal with this question within the District prior to 30thJune and hope that our proposal is successful.

On another matter members can now see upcoming events at the Peace Bell, and upcoming school tours to the Peace Bell simply by clicking the Events tab on the web site "canberrarotarypeacebell.org". On the same site by clicking the Peace Pole tab members can now see a full list of schools and Clubs involved with the Rotary 100 Peace Pole project. Special thanks to Chris Grey for his tireless work on the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell web site.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Our final Women's Event for this Rotary year. Please join us for a coffee morning at the Arboretum, 10:30 a.m. on the 15th of June 2021. HISTORY REMINDERS

Ever wonder what happens when you forget history or are nationally arrogant?

JFK's Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. De Gaulle said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible.

Rusk responded, " Does that include those who are buried here ?"

You could have heard a pin drop.

A Royal Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the U.S., England, Canada, Australia and the French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks when a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, the English learn only English, " Why is that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French? "

Without hesitating, the British Admiral replied, " Maybe it's because the Brits, Americans, Canadians, Aussies and South Africans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German "

You could have heard a pin drop.
