Welcome to another News Notes. The big event this past week was the Candle Festival, with Bill’s taiyaki the star attraction at our stall.

There is no meeting at the Commonwealth Club this week. Instead, we will meet on Zoom to hear about an important Rotary program: Australian Rotary Health Research.

As usual, there’s a photo from the last meeting; the roster (please check it!); coming events; and, to conclude, a caveat on purchasing new technology.

Annual General Meeting
The Club’s Annual General Meeting and elections will be held on Thursday, 16 November, during our regular meeting at the Commonwealth Club. Secretary Russell has sent out the agenda and last AGM minutes: please let him know if you haven’t received them.

The queue for taiyaki
Thanks to the several members of the Club who set up and staffed our taiyaki and drinks stall for over 5 hours, and then cleaned up after. The star of the event was Bill’s taiyaki (fish-shaped panakes with a red bean paste filling): over 250 serves of two of these delicious pancakes were sold. At times there was quite a queue, and we needed to warn people of the wait time (it took around 15 minutes to cook four serves). Due to the cooler weather, sales of beer and other drinks were down. The financials will follow when Treasurer Ross has received advice on all expenses and can work out how well we did out of the event.

Also, the official program included and invitation to the public to visit and ring the Peace Bell. Michael and others were there to facilitate this, which raised funds for Peace Bell activities.

Next meeting
On Thursday, 9 November, we meet on Zoom and will hear from John Egan, who will speak to the Club about Australian Rotary Health Research. Michael will kindly open the Zoom link at noon for informal interaction ahead of the formal meeting start at 12:30 pm. The link for the meeting is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82035457730.

If you are not able to perform your allocated duty, please arrange a replacement and advise Acting President Eric. Please advise Stephen of any planned absences to avoid being rostered on while away.

Your Help is Needed this Sunday
On Sunday, 12 November, we will participate in the annual clean up and light gardening (weeding, trimming, sweeping) at Canberra Nara Peace Park. I am seeking a team of 6 or 7 to help me from 9.00 am to 12 noon. Remember, our past President Terry Newman was instrumental in developing the park from 2005 and a landscape architect from the Heijokyo Rotary Club was an important consultant on the project. It’s our park!!

Morning tea and a barbecue is provided.

Can you help? If yes, please email Bill on Andrews79@iinet.net.au, and bring gloves on the day.
