Notes on the Run from the President - 21st July 2025.
Hi Everyone

I'm back!

Had a lovely few days in paradise. There might be a tale or two of a sinking ship (or Kayak) there too. I did try to sell a few bell tours to some school groups during a trivia competition too! But all back to it again now getting ready for upcoming events.

We have a board meeting this week and a peace bell committee meeting soon too.

Planning is under way for the 2 ceremonies at the Peace Bell, Hiroshima Nagasaki in August with Rotaract being the lead and the international day of peace in September wit the UN

We are going to be doing Ninja Sausages at the Candle Festival in the Spring, any ideas on making a sausage a ninja sausage are warmly received!

See you on Thursday

Last week's guest speaker, Bill Donovan
On a cold Thursday at the Royal Canberra golf club, Members of the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin met to celebrate its weekly meeting with the focus on ageing.

Dr Bill Donovan was a guest of the Club. Bill indicated he was born before WW 2. Bill's background in education together with his career in education (focusing on research and later as a principal of Hawker and Phillip College and ending is career as Director of the Centre for continuing Education at the ANU) commencing in Canberra from 1977 positioned him well to present his take on aging.

Bill spoke with purpose about the benefits of fun, food, friendship, the three "F" words which he believes extends your life. These words resonated with some club members, a few being of an age older than Bill.

He commented on Aged Humour, on Probus members (Macquarie Probus Club) being happy to volunteer for activities associated with Rotary fundraising and projects while providing an invitation offer to volunteer on invitation.

Bill is currently District President of Probus, President of his Bridge Club and Bowles Secretary at Belconnen Bowling Club.

ED. Coincidentally, I received a call from Phil Greenwood  (formerly CEO of John James Memorial Hospital) on Saturday asking if our Club would sponsor a new PROBUS club based at the new LDK Amberfield Retirement Village off Cotter Road ( overlooking the Molonglo River). We can discuss it at the Board meeting on Thursday – I am sure we can take it on. Bill

Rotary In-joke of the Week:

An elderly woman went into the Dentist’s surgery and asked how much it would cost for a tooth extraction.
The dentist replied, “Our fixed price for an extraction is $380.”
The old woman said, “Oh, that’s a lot money. Have you got anything cheaper for an older patient?
“Well”, the dentist replied, “I could give you a small discount making the price $360.”
“What if there was no anaesthetic?” the old woman enquired.
“In that case I could do it for $220”, the dentist said. “However it would be very painful.”
“Hmmmm”, the old woman went on, “What about if we used one of those trainee dentists and still without an anaesthetic?”
“Well, it is possible, however they are only training and things could go wrong. It would be even more painful, but I suppose that we could do it for $120.”
“Ah, that’s still a bit much!” the old woman said. “How about if we made it a training session, with the extraction done by one of the students and all of the other trainees watching and learning?”
The dentist thought about it and said, “In that case I suppose that we could do it for $50.”
“Excellent”, the old woman replied, “Can you book my husband in for next Wednesday?”
