Last week’s meeting
World Environment Day is celebrated each year on 5 June, and in keeping with the week’s theme, the Club’s long-time member, George Wilson, presented a very interesting talk about increasing private sector involvement in koala conservation at our meeting on 8 June.
For some this may seem a radical idea but the threats to koalas are such that innovative approaches to their conservation are needed. The urgency is considerable with koalas’ conservation status being upgraded to endangered in NSW, Queensland and the ACT - populations are declining (cars, dogs, disease, habitat loss) and distributions are patchy.
Koalas are valuable (intrinsically and commercially) but markets are constrained. Should leasing/ownership be possible outside of zoos and how would this work? To complement existing efforts in habitat protection and restoration, George is suggesting a series of safe havens (predator proof islands on private land) that protect and breed koalas which can then be traded. Government’s role would be to regulate leases and monitor trade and animal welfare.
