Last Week's Meeting Presentation (10th November) Peter Abbott spoke about the Native and Introduced Specis of Beess in Southern NSW and the Act

What do teddy bears, cuckoos and green metallic carpenters have in common?  They are among 200 species of native bees found in the Canberra and South Coast regions. In his talk about native bees Peter Abbott provided images and information about the various bee species, as well as the hives and other homes they make in trees and grasses.  It was a very informative talk with the opportunity afterwards to taste native honey, and to purchase Peter’s native bee ’spotters guide’.

UPDATE ON THE PEACE BELL TOURS AT THE LENNOX GARDENS

“Russell and I were delighted to conduct a tour through Lennox Gardens and on to the Peace Bell for 52 students from Chairo Christian School Pakenham. This is the second tour for this school. Attempts are being made to try and have a Peace Pole donated to the school by the Rotary Club of Pakenham.

A meeting had been held between the United Nations Information Centre in Canberra, a representative from the Israel Embassy, a representative from the ACT Jewish Community, the President of the United Nations Association Act and myself representing the Club. The purpose of the meeting was to see if it might be possible for a ceremony to be held at the Peace Bell in late January or early February 2023 to recognise the United Nations Holocaust Memorial Day. The purpose of such a ceremony is to increase the diversity of activity at the Peace Bell.

Signage for The Candle Festival 2022.
Chris Gray has designed two large banners that will be erected on the 2 x 3mx3m marquees our club has booked.
The great news is Chris has also secured sponsorship to produce two 70cm high by 3metres wide banners. Pierre Rey, owner of BytesnColours at 42 Braddon has agreed to print them free of charge for our club.

These banners will be printed on ‘mesh’ material so they breathe and are not effected by wind as much as PVC banners are.

Michael Rabey and Chris (the marketing team) will erect the banners and put a roll up banner promoting BytesnColours.

CHOIR CONCERT BALTA
You are invited to a choir concert “BALTA” on Thursday, November 17 at 8:00pm at the Polish White Eagle Club, 38 David St., Turner ACT 2612.

What does the eighth best choir in the world sound like?

Lovers of music have a wonderful opportunity to find out because BALTA, the Latvian female choir holding this place according to the German organisation Interkultur, will be performing in Canberra on November 17, 2022.

BALTA has performed in Latvia, USA, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Austria, South Korea, China, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, and Italy. They have regularly taken part in a wide range of choral competitions and festivals frequently securing first prize, a gold medal or the Grand Prix in competitions. The list of the choir’s competition achievements would happily fill this page.

BALTA was founded in 1999 by Professor Māra Marnauza, who continues her work as the choir’s artistic director and conductor. Prof. Marnauza is also one of the Principal Conductors at the Latvian Song Celebration which event takes place every 5 years and involves 14,000-16,000 choristers. She has also been a jury member at choral competitions in Latvia, Austria, Italy, Estonia, and Germany as well as presenting masterclasses in Europe, USA, China and South Korea.

The program in Canberra will include traditional Latvian songs as well as choral works by the well-known Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds as well as international composers - Ricardo Lafuente Aguado, Juan Hernando Sanz, Josep Robert Selles, James Stevens, Ola Gjeilo, Kim Andre Arnesen and Anna-Mari Kähärä among others.

This concert forms part of the celebration of Latvia’s Independence Day.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
JOKES……..PONDERISMS
The mother of a 17-year-old girl was concerned that her daughter was having sex. Worried the girl might become pregnant and adversely impact the family’s status, she consulted the family doctor.
The doctor told her that teenagers today were very wilful and any attempt to stop the girl would probably result in rebellion. He then told her to arrange for her daughter to be put on birth control and until then, talk to her and give her a box of condoms.
Later that evening, as her daughter was preparing for a date, the mother told her about the situation and handed her a box of condoms. The girl burst out laughing and reached over to hug her mother, saying, “Oh Mom! You don't have to worry about that! I'm dating Susan!”

A man went to church one day and afterward he stopped to shake the preacher's hand. He said, “Preacher, I’ll tell you, that was a damned fine sermon. Damned good!”
The preacher said, “Thank you sir, but I'd rather you didn't use profanity.”
The man said, “I was so damned impressed with that sermon I put five thousand dollars in the offering plate!”
The preacher said, “No shit?”

One night, an 87-year-old woman came home from Bingo to find her 92-year-old husband in bed with another woman. She became violent and ended up pushing him off the balcony of their 20th floor apartment, killing him instantly
Brought before the court on the charge of murder, she was asked if she had anything to say in her own defence
“Your Honour,” she began coolly, “I figured that at 92, if he could screw, he could fly.”

A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa…
“The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago.Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach  lining. Chinese
food is loaded with MSG.
High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. However, there is one thing that’s the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it.
Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most
grief and suffering for years after eating it?”
After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his and, softly said, “Wedding Cake.”

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman who knocks everyone's socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm and who hangs over Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word.
His buddies at the club are all aghast. At their
very first chance, they corner him and ask, “Bob, how’d you get the trophy girlfriend?”
Bob replied, “Girlfriend? She's my wife!”
They’re knocked over, but continue to ask: “So, how'd you persuade her to marry you?”
“I lied about my age,” Bob replied.
“What? Did you tell her you were only 50?”
Bob smiled and said, “No, I told her I was 90.”

Groups of Americans were traveling by tour bus through Switzerland . As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat's milk was used.
She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing. “These,” she explained, “are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce.”
She then asked, “What do you do in America with your old goats?” A spry old gentleman answered, “They send us on bus trips.
