Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin Bulletin 21 August 2025.

Notes on the Run

A small but enthusiastic membership enjoyed the talk from George Wilson  on the resurrection of the Palma Wallaby – see Neil’s report below.
It raises once again the issue of membership. We are simply on the precipice. I hope we can come up with some constructive plans to try and recruit new members soon.
Monica has made a good start with an approach from Radford College for us to man an information stall and disseminate material showing what we can do, and what’s in it for young Rotarians.
Next Thursday will be our second social meeting – a lunch at the Red Shed café called Sosta. We have a booked table looking out on the Lake. To get there, drive along the Lake foreshore road from either the university end or from Scrivener Dam, and look for the prominent signs to the Red Shed on Black Mountain peninsula. We will have a working lunch looking at the Club’s programme of events, how we run the club meetings  and how we might distribute the surplus funds in the community account. Do you have some ideas?  See you there!
We also have our monthly Board Meeting on Wednesday at Warrick's office. If you have anything you would like to raise please contact Warrick or myself, or better still , come along to the meeting.

Dr George Wilson - always positive, always looking for solutions.
Looking intently at George for answers.....

Our long-time member, Dr George Wilson, presented a fascinating talk about the natural history of the Parma Wallaby, its extinction in NSW and its export to NZ in the nineteenth century, its rediscovery in NSW and re-introduction from NZ in the 20th century, and now its redistribution to sanctuaries around the state.
This beautiful and once abundant little animal is very vulnerable to predation, particularly by foxes and feral cats, and so survives only behind very good fences.
George concluded by discussing some of the (rather perverse) regulations that inhibit a potential role for the private sector in assisting with wildlife conservation.
Subsequent discussions included whether there are potential activities for our club in assisting with wildlife conservation.
Neil Byron.
