From the President

Hello Club Members

We will be having our second Meeting at the Royal Canberra Golf Club this week to assess this venue. I will be speaking on the Lucky Generation which is essentially the Baby Boomers. We have lived and benefited from the greatest advancements in science and technology in human history. It will be a romp down memory lane.

We are having discussions with the Canberra Sunrise and Sundowners Clubs about merging or coming to some arrangements which can maintain a Club size that can create an large enough Club to maintain activities.

The details of both Club meeting times and activities are given below. One of our objectives is to maintain our Club Projects and especially the Peace Bell Activities. The Sunrise club President has produced a Value Statement which the Board will respond to. His Club wants to maintain the MUNA Project, Dream Cricket Clinics as a prerequisite of a Merger. These and many other issues will have to be considered in this major possible change for our Club.

Message from Berlin World Peace Bell coordinators
Member Michael received the following message from Anja Mewes and her husband Bernd, coordinators at the Berlin World Peace Bell, and he thought it worth sharing:

Dear Michael,

Time flies, the global problems on our planet are not getting any less, the escalation spiral towards a third world war rotates inexorably. The message of our peace bells – to set an example for peace – remains more relevant and necessary than ever.

On August 6th, 2024, like every year, we will celebrate the memorial and memorial event at our World Peace Bell in the Volkspark Friedrichshain.

It is so important that we send signs of peace into the world! Our politicians seem to have lost dialogue and the policy of détente. All you hear is the call for more and more weapons. Medium-range missiles are to be stationed in Germany. What a fatal sign! It is so important that we move civil society to demand signs of peace, not to answer the call for more weapons. Billions are being spent on armaments, while there is a lack of money everywhere in social areas. There is a lack of housing in education, in healthcare, in infrastructure. There are so many global problems in the area of the environment and climate that can only be solved together. Following all of this makes me very worried. The thought that my children and grandchildren would one day have to experience a war scares me.

Let us continue to fight together for a peaceful world. Above all, stay healthy and optimistic.

Warm greetings also to your dear wife

Anja and Bernd Mewes
